Ernest Hecht UCL Scholarships (for overseas students)

Important Information for all Applicants

Two overseas scholarships and two UK scholarships, funded by the Ernest Hecht Charitable Foundation, will be available each academic session to prospective undergraduates embarking on undergraduate degree studies at UCL.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants for the overseas scholarships must be prospective students from Latin America, holding an offer of admission to pursue a full-time undergraduate programme of study at UCL which will be of some practical use in their country of origin. The scholarship are open to candidates from all faculties however preference will be given to those candidates joining one of the following four UCL faculties:

  • Faculty of Arts and Humanities
  • Faculty of the Built Environment
  • Faculty of Biomedical Studies
  • Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

Prospective undergraduates admitted to joint programmes, part-time or modular study are not eligible to apply.

Scholarships come into effect only once the student has fully enrolled at UCL on his/her chosen programme of study. Initial scholarship offers are provisional subject to the selected candidate fulfilling any entry requirements. In the event that a selected candidate does not fulfill his/her entry requirements, the scholarship offer is revoked, and the scholarship offered to the highest ranked reserve candidate.

Selection Criteria

Scholarship recipients and reserve candidates are selected on the basis of academic achievement and potential. Financial circumstances will not be taken into account.

Value: Benefits and Duration

Overseas scholarships consist of £2,000 per annum for a maximum of three years.

Annual renewal of scholarships is subject to good progress by the scholar. Where recipients are enrolled on programmes of more than three years' duration, UCL may continue the award for the remaining years of the programme.

The scholarship may be held alongside other scholarships and awards.

All scholarship holders are expected to submit a short final report about their time at UCL and their career plans within two months of the termination of their scholarship.

Application Deadline and Procedure

Eligible candidates must complete an Ernest Hecht UCL (overseas) Scholarship application form and submit it to the UCL Scholarships Office by 2 June 2009 (extended deadline) preceding the start of their undergraduate studies at UCL.

UCL is unable to confirm receipt of applications.

Selection and Notification of Results

Scholarship recipients and reserve candidates will be selected in June by a panel of UCL academics on the basis of their scholarship applications and their UCAS admissions applications. The funder of the scholarships may attend the selection.

Successful and reserve candidates can expect to be notified by early July. Applicants who have not heard from the UCL Scholarships Office by mid-July can assume that they have not been selected as a recipient or reserve for one of the scholarships.
