Wellcome Trust CALIBER MSc Studentships (x2) in Epidemiology

The UCL Clinical Epidemiology Group, based within the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, is offering two one-year Studentships for full-time students undertaking the MSc in Social Epidemiology at UCL. The awards are to start in October 2012 and the Studentship will include payment of tuition fees (at Home/EU level). The recipients will be expected to conduct their research project (dissertation) within the Clinical Epidemiology Group and thus an interest in exploiting electronic health records for research in cardiovascular disease is essential.

Opportunities include projects in relating to cardiovascular disease and depression, the patient journey, biomarkers and diabetes and in training in the use of electronic health record data and statistical methods.

The Clinical Epidemiology Group is investigating potentially remediable aetiologic and prognostic factors for specific coronary disease phenotypes. In the CArdiovascular disease research LInking Bespoke studies and Electronic Records (CALIBER) consortium, funded by the Wellcome Trust, we are exploiting large scale resources such as the national register of acute coronary syndromes, linked to the primary care record, and investigator led ("bespoke") studies, which collect DNA and other exposures, (e.g. Whitehall II).

Eligibility requirements

Candidates can be from any country but must be intending to pursue the full-time UCL MSc in Social Epidemiology and by the date of the application deadline, hold an offer of admission (conditional or unconditional) for the course.

Selection criteria

Awards are made on the basis of academic excellence, as demonstrated within a curriculum vitae and interview.

However, financial need will also be taken into consideration. The Studentships will be awarded upon the recommendation of an academic selection panel.

Value and duration

The value of each award is the Home/EU tuition fees for the MSc in Social Epidemiology. Awards are tenable for one year of full-time study only for the session 2012-2013. Overseas applicants from non-EU countries would need to pay the difference between home fees and overseas fees.

Terms and conditions of the award
  • The Studentship may be held alongside other scholarships, studentships, awards or bursaries.
  • The Studentship cannot be transferred to another institution, nor deferred to a later year.
  • The Studentship will first be applied to the recipient’s tuition fees, with any remainder tuition fees payable by the recipient.
  • The Studentship payments are only made if the recipient is fully enrolled in the MSc in Social Epidemiology at UCL.
  • The recipient must have an interest in exploiting electronic health records for research in cardiovascular disease and undertake their research project within the UCL Clinical Epidemiology Group on linked electronic health record data.
  • All awards are subject to provisions of the General Regulations for Scholarships, Awards, Bursaries, Prizes and medals.
