Earth Sciences mature students' masterclass
Icy worlds of the Outer Solar System
This masterclass was designed for prospective mature
students who are interested in studying Earth Sciences at university.
It
consisted of a lecture which looked at the diverse geology of
icy satellites orbiting the Gas Giant planets, and their exploration by
spacecraft over the last forty years.
Students learnt about the active ice volcanism on Saturn's tiny moon, Enceladus, and the liquid-petroleum lakes on the planet-sized moon, Titan, as well as the subsurface oceans of liquid water – each greater in volume than all the Earth's oceans – that exist inside many of the larger icy worlds.
