Student clubs and societies

Your home away from home – UCL Malaysian Society

A real sense of family, home and cultural connection is re-created thanks to UCL Malaysian Society, known as MSoc. Members are grouped into “families” with second-year students forming pairs of “parents” who adopt four to five first year students as “children”. This means that you will have access to a social group for support, making friends, or just to hang out! Your family will keep you engaged via a series of casual events (pot lucks, family bingo and many more) run by the Society throughout the year.

The year starts with The Welcome Picnic, the first event in an exciting social calendar that includes something for everyone: Gala Night to experience the finer things, MGames to compete competitively against other Malaysian societies in the UK, and RD programmes to build leadership skills and kick start exciting careers in all areas of the globe.

You will also have the chance to celebrate major Malaysian festivals - Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the Lunar New Year and Diwali - at annual festival dinners thrown by the Society.

Academic support is offered via a mentor-mentee system in which Society members studying similar subjects are grouped together to provide mutual assistance.

Celebrate the biggest night of the year with UCL MSoc #MNight

The biggest night of the year for the calendar is MNight. Consistently attracting sell-out crowds of hundreds of people. MNight is a senory delight of an elaborate celebration of Malaysian culture brought to life in the form of a stage play, singing, storytelling, acting and traditional dance.

A performance not to be missed including traditional dances from Malaysia’s various cultural backgrounds (zapin and joget, shanziwu (fan dancing), bhangra etc.), accompanied by performances from various contemporary and traditional instruments.

For most attendees, it is an entertaining and fun insight into Malaysian culture; but for every UCL Malaysian student in the audience, it is just a nostalgic reminder of home, two oceans away.
