University Preparatory Certificates / Foundation courses

UCL University Preparatory Certificate (UPCH / UPCSE) applicants will be expected to complete the appropriate High School Certificate or Diploma in their own country and have obtained, or are expecting to obtain, very good grades.

The UCL Centre for Languages and International Education (CLIE) website gives a guide to the minimum national high school qualifications for entry to the University Preparatory Certificate for the Humanities (UPCH) and the University Preparatory Certificate for Science and Engineering (UPCSE). Suitable applicants will then be contacted and asked to take an Entrnace Test.

Undergraduate programmes (e.g. BA; BSc; BArch; BASc)

UCL accepts A-levels, International Baccalaureate (IB), and a number of other qualifications for direct entry to its undergraduate programmes. To find out whether UCL accepts qualifications from your home country please select your country and view the ‘Entry requirements’ tab.

Graduate preparatory courses

UCL’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses are designed for international students who are planning to study on a graduate degree programmes at either UCL or at another UK institution. The intensive courses are designed to enable international students to reach the high levels of English required for degree study at UCL. Many course participants will already hold a conditional or unconditional offer of a place on a degree programme, others may still be in the process of applying for a place on a graduate programme. The following courses are available at the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education:

UCL Diploma in English for Academic Purposes (Sept-June)

UCL Pre-sesional English Courses (April, June, July, August – Sept)

Graduate taught programmes (e.g. MA; MSc; MArch; MRes)

General entry requirements for taught master’s degrees

In the UK the grading system for undergraduate degrees is as follows:

  • First-class honours (1st class)
  • Upper second-class honours (2:1)
  • Lower second-class honours (2:2)
  • Third-class honours (3rd)

However, there is a guide to the equivalent grades from universities in other countries on the Information by country pages of the UCL website.
