This course considers the politics of visual culture in the US in relation to the complex process of modernisation between c. 1900 and the US entry into the Second World War. It focuses particularly on the way pictorial practices (including painting, photography and magazine illustration) were used to articulate critiques of the culture and values of the dominant social groups, as defined in terms of class, gender and race. It is sssessed by two essays (40% of total mark) and 3 hour exam. History of Art majors with appropriate background.
