This courses introduces students to some of the most notable developments in nineteenth century American painting, and explores how they can be understood in relation to the ideological and aesthetic needs of particular social groups. Attention is given to the role of artistic institutions and patronage in the forming of artists' work. Unifying themes include the implications of the US through westward expansion and imperialism and of the process of economic modernization which had made it the most powerful nation in the world by 1900. It is assessed by one essay (40% of total mark) and 2 hour exam (60%), History of Art majors only.
