Current Students

The following links provide information and advice for students currently studying at UCL

Course Registration

All course registration occurs on arrival at UCL as part of the orientation programme. You will need to meet with your Affiliate Tutor in your main admitting department to approve the courses you are interested in. All courses are subject to availability and Course Tutor approval.

All students must take a full course load of modules (2.0 UCL course units per semester) and under and/or overloads are not allowed. Remember that you must take at least 50% of your courses from within your main admitting department (first department listed on your offer letter), at least 25% of your courses from within your joint admitting department (where applicable) and the remainder as electives from across the university.

Please note that as an Undergraduate or Taught Graduate student, you must register for and take a full course load of modules at UCL. You are expected to attend all classes and sit all assessments for registered classes whilst at UCL. It is not possible to attend UCL at Undergraduate or Taught Graduate level to conduct research for your thesis unless such a module exists within your main admitting department for the correct amount of credit.

You must gain approval from the relevant affiliate tutor for each course you wish to take before you sign up for the course on portico.

If you are having problems with course registration or finding suitable courses, please speak with you Affiliate Tutor or member of staff from the Study Abroad Team.

Remember that no courses can be guaranteed prior to arrival, and you must come prepared with a list of alternative courses in the event that your first choices are not available or suitable.

There is a short drop/add period at the start of term, but please ensure that you gain approval to change courses from your main department, home university and the Study Abroad Team before the due deadlines (printed in your affiliate notes).

Once you have finalised your courses, do ensure that your portico reflects the courses you are taking. Your portico record will be used to register you for examinations and assessment and will be used to generate your transcript.

Affiliate Notes

During the Orientation Programme you should have received a copy of Affiliate Notes with important information regarding course registration and using portico.

You may use your UCL username and password to view a copy of these notes online.

Grade Conversions

A copy of your transcript will be sent to your home university after you leave UCL. The reverse of the transcript will show the UCL grading scale.

For JYA and Exchange students, a recommended letter grade (A-F) will be shown alongside your actual mark and a copy of the grade conversions can be found at the end of your affiliate notes.

For Erasmus and Independent students, your UCL mark and Pass or Fail will show, along with the number of UCL ECTS credits awarded. A copy of these grade conversions can also be found in the affiliate notes.

At undergraduate level, the pass mark is 40% and at Graduate level the pass mark is 50%.

Who to contact if you need help

At UCL there is a wide range of people here to help and guide you during your stay at UCL.

General: If you have any questions or concerns about your stay at UCL but are unsure who to ask, contact the staff in the Study Abroad Team who will be pleased to help. You can visit the student centre Monday to Friday 10.am to 4pm, or email directly to: affiliatestudents@ucl.ac.uk

Academic: If you have any academic concerns, you should first try to discuss this with your affiliate tutor, and if appropriate a specific course tutor. You may also come to the study abroad team who will try to assist and advise you. Affiliate Tutor details can be found in the study abroad guide.

Personal: If you have any worries about your studies, emotional issues, problems with relationships or difficulties of living in a big city away from family and friends, you can talk confidentially to a counsellor at UCL Student Psychological Services. You do need to register in advance to use the service, and can find full details on their website as well as other useful guidance.

Many contact details and important information can also be found in the ISOP booklet given to you during the Orientation Programme. In addition, you might find the following links useful:

Leisure and Social Activities

A great way to meet new friends and fully integrate into UCL life is to take part in one of the many leisure and social activities on offer throughout the year. UCL has a policy of keeping Wednesday afternoons free of teaching, so every student has the opportunity to engage in some sort of cultural, sporting or voluntary activity.

Academic Resources

As a study abroad student at UCL you have access to some of the best academic facilities available. Whether you choose to study Engineering or the Sciences, Humanities or the Arts, UCL provides you with the technical and intellectual resources to achieve the most from your studies.
