Study Abroad - How to Apply


The application procedure and eligibility criteria for study abroad will vary according to your department and programme of study. Please choose from the list below for a more detailed instructions.

Bartlett School of Planning

Planning

The period of study abroad will be one semester and will typically take place during the spring and summer terms of your second year.

You will be required to register your initial interest in studying abroad by completing and submitting a Study Abroad Approval Form to the Study Abroad Team by the end of the autumn term of your first year.

Study Abroad Approval Forms will be available to collect from the Study Abroad Team from November 2012. Completed forms must be returned to the Study Abroad Team no later than Friday 7 December 2012.

During the spring term, you will participate in the Study Abroad Preparation Programme, the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for progression to your period of study abroad.

With the assistance of your department and the Study Abroad Team, you will prepare your application to the institution at which you wish to study abroad. Application deadlines will differ according to the institution you are applying to - contact your Study Abroad Tutor for details.

Faculty of Arts & Humanities

Arts & Humanities

The information in this section applies to students from the following departments:

  • European Social & Political Studies
  • Greek & Latin
  • Hebrew & Jewish Studies
  • School of European Languages, Culture & Society

In order to study abroad you must be registered for, or transfer to, a four-year degree programme. The period of study abroad will be one  year and it will take place during the third year of your four-year programme.

You will receive guidance about planning and preparing for your year abroad from your department during the autumn term of your second year. Contact your Study Abroad Tutor for further details.

During the spring term of your second year, you will participate in the Study Abroad Preparation Programme, the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for progression to your year abroad.

With the assistance of your department, you will prepare your application to the institution at which you wish to study abroad. Application deadlines will differ according to the institution you are applying to - contact your Study Abroad Tutor for details.

Students Wishing to Study Abroad in Québec

Students studying French have the option of spending their year abroad at the Université de Montréal or the Université du Québec à Montréal in Canada.

As these two exchanges are coordinated centrally by the Study Abroad Team and are also open to students from other academic departments, if you would like to be considered for a place on either of these exchanges you must submit a UCL Exchange application to the Study Abroad Team during the autumn term of your second year.

Applications for UCL Exchanges will open in November 2012 and the application deadline will be Friday 7 December 2012. See here for details.

Faculty of Engineering Sciences

Engineering

The information in this section applies to students from the following departments:

In order to study abroad you must be registered for, or transfer to, a four-year degree programme which allows for a year to be spent abroad.

The period of study abroad will be one year and it will take place during the third year of your four-year programme (NB. for Biochemical and Chemical Engineering students, the year abroad takes place during the fourth year of your four-year programme).

Information Sessions

The Study Abroad Team will organise information sessions during the autumn term for students who are interested in studying abroad. At these sessions you will be presented with information about the benefits of studying abroad and the opportunities open to you as a UCL student. You will also have the opportunity to speak to members of staff from the Study Abroad Team and ask them any questions you may have about studying abroad.

Study Abroad Fair

The UCL Study Abroad Fair takes place in November each year and is a good opportunity for students to find out more about the different universities at which they could study.

Students attending the fair will have the opportunity to view prospectuses and other information from UCL's partner universities, speak to UCL students who have recently returned from a period of study abroad, and meet exchange students from UCL's partner universities who are currently studying at UCL.

Study Abroad Approval Form

In order to study abroad you must be registered for one of the following LLB programmes: Law with French Law, Law with German Law, Law with Hispanic Law or Law with Another Legal System. The period of study abroad will be one year and it will take place during the third year of your four-year programme.

Life Sciences

The information in this section applies to students from the following departments:

  • Biological Sciences
  • Phonetics & Linguistics
  • Psychology

In order to study abroad you must be registered for, or transfer to, the four-year MSci Biological Sciences (International Programme) or BA Linguistics (International Programme). Psychology students can study abroad as part of the three-year BSc Psychology programme.

The period of study abroad will be one year and it will take place during the third year of your four-year programme (NB. for Psychology students the year abroad takes place during the second year of your three-year programme).

If you are studying Anthropology or Geography, the period of study abroad will be one semester and will take place during the autumn term of your third year.

Students Wishing to Study Abroad in Canada

Students studying Economics have the option of spending their year abroad at the University of Toronto or the University of British Columbia in Canada.

Students studying History with a Year Abroad have the option of spending their year abroad at the University of Toronto.

As these Canadian exchanges are coordinated centrally by the Study Abroad Team and are also open to students from other academic departments, if you would like to be considered for a place on one of these exchanges you must submit a UCL Exchange application to the Study Abroad Team during the autumn term of your second year.

Fine Art

In order to study abroad you must be registered for the four-year BA Fine Art programme (in which case the period of study abroad will take place during the autumn term of your third year), or the three-year BFA Fine Art programme (in which case the period of study abroad will take place during the autumn term of your second year).

You will receive guidance about planning and preparing for your period of study abroad from your department during the autumn term of your first year (for BFA students) or the autumn term of your second year (for BA students). Contact your Study Abroad Tutor for further details.
