Japan
There is a long tradition dating back to 1863 of Japanese students studying at UCL. These early students included Hirobumi Ito, the first Prime Minister of Meiji Japan. In the academic year 2012/13 there are 113 Japanese students enrolled on graduate and undergraduate degree programmes at UCL. UCL is one of the most popular UK destinations for Japanese students.
UCL's President & Provost, Professor Malcolm Grant, met with Mr Koizumi in Tokyo in March 2004.
UCL Links with Japan
As detailed above UCL's links with Japan date back to 1863. More recent links include those with the Eisai Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. whose European research laboratories are based at UCL. The former Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Junichiro Koizumi is an alumni of UCL having studied Economics from 1968-69.
UCL has formal student exchange agreements with the University of Tokyo, Waseda University and the International Christian University. General agreements of co-operation have also been established with Chuo University, Hitotsubashi University, Kyoto Institute of Technology, Osaka University and Nagasaki University.
