Accommodation

Embarking on a degree is an exciting challenge and for many students this may mean living independently for the first time. Finding suitable housing in London can be difficult but there are various services available to support you in finding appropriate accommodation at both UCL and privately. On the following pages you will find information to assist you in applying for accommodation.

UCL Accommodation

Located in the heart of London, and with three-quarters of UCL accommodation within 10 to 15 minutes walk of UCL, students have an opportunity to live in some of the most exciting parts of the capital. There are different types of accommodation, Halls of Residence or Student Houses, with some being purpose built, while others are older, period buildings which have been modernised and adapted. Most student rooms are single study-bedrooms, equipped with a bed, desk, chairs, washbasin cupboard and bookcases. There are also a small number of shared rooms, for two students, which can be very cost effective.

UCL endeavors to accommodate all international students in UCL halls of residence for their first year of study. In order to be guaranteed accommodation it is essential that students meet the necessary deadlines and eligibility criteria. Further detail can be found below:

Undergraduate

Places in UCL student accommodation are allocated by the UCL Student Residences team.

UCL guarantees accommodation to those undergraduate students from outside the UK/EU who meet all of the following criteria:

  • They are studying full-time for a full academic year
  • They complete and return their housing application forms no later than 31st May (undergraduates) of the year in which they intend to start.
  • They have received and firmly accepted an offer of a place at UCL, conditional or unconditional, by 31st May (undergraduates) of the year in which they intend to start.
  • They have spent no previous period of time living in a residence associated with an institution of higher education located in the London area (i.e. within the M25 motorway)

Those who have firmly accepted the offer of a place at UCL should apply for accommodation at www.ucl.ac.uk/accommodation

Students are usually informed in late-July to early-August whether or not their application for the student residences has been successful. Graduate

Places in one the UCL student residences are allocated by the UCL Student Residences team. UCL guarantees accommodation to those graduate students from outside the UK/EU who meet all of the following criteria:

  • They are studying full-time for a full academic year
  • They complete and return their housing application forms no later than 30th June (graduates) of the year in which they intend to start.
  • They have received and firmly accepted an offer of a place at UCL, conditional or unconditional, by 30th June (graduates) of the year in which they intend to start.
  • They have spent no previous time attending an institution of higher education in London.

Those who have firmly accepted the offer of a place at UCL should apply for accommodation at www.ucl.ac.uk/accommodation

Affiliate Students

Details of the accommodation arrangements for students coming to UCL for short-term study such as Junior Year Abroad (JYA), exchanges or Erasmus can be found in the Study Abroad section of the website.

Accommodation for couples (married or in a civil partnership) and those with children

There is limited UCL accommodation available for students accompanied by children. Students with children are advised not to bring them to London until firm arrangements for accommodation are in place. Applicants requiring more information are advised to contact UCL Student Residences

Alternative Accommodation

Although every effort will be made to house those international students who fall outside of these criteria, we regret that we are unable to make a guarantee of a place in a UCL student residence. Those students should therefore be prepared to make their own accommodation arrangements in the event that we are unable to house them.
