Erasmus
For students who wish to come and study at UCL via reciprocal Erasmus agreement.
Am I Eligible?
It is only possible to apply to UCL via a reciprocal Erasmus agreement. Before you apply you need to check that your university/institution has an Erasmus exchange agreement with UCL, and you need to ensure that it is with your department and at the correct level (e.g. Undergraduate or Graduate).
UCL does not accept Erasmus free-movers. It is only possible to apply as an Erasmus student where a reciprocal agreement is currently in place.
What Can I Study?
As an Erasmus student at UCL, you must apply to the relevant department covered by the exchange agreement with your institution.
At undergraduate level, you will need to take at least 50% of your courses within that department, but you may choose up to 50% as electives from other departments. Please note that there are some restrictions, and certain departments (including Economics and English language and literature) are not open to Erasmus students.
You can see a full list of courses and departments available in our Study Abroad Guide.
At graduate level you will be expected to take 100% of your courses within your admitting department, and you should consult the relevant departmental websites for course information.
To be eligible to study as an Erasmus student at UCL, you must take and participate in a full course load of study. At undergraduate level you will be expected to take 2.0 UCL course units each semester (30 ECTS) which is typically 4 courses per semester (4.0 cu / 60 ECTS for the full year). You will also be expected to attend classes and take all assessment for all of your registered courses at UCL.
Admissions Requirements
You must be currently enrolled at an institution covered by an Erasmus exchange agreement and studying at the appropriate level. If you are studying towards a Bachelor’s degree, you will need to apply at Undergraduate level. If you are studying towards a Master’s degree, you will need to apply at Graduate Taught level. If you are studying towards a PhD, you will need to apply at Graduate Research level.
To apply as an Erasmus student, you should be nominated by your home university. Your home university should nominate you on the basis of your suitability for the programme, your excellent academic background and good level of proficiency in English (to the equivalent of an IELTS 6.5).
You should also be currently studying in a similar area to the department of admission and UCL Admission Tutors need to be confident that you have sufficient academic background in their subject (and enthusiasm for it) to enable you to take classes alongside regular degree students.
For details of admission requirements (including any pre-requisites) specific to individual subject areas and courses, you should contact the relevant Affiliate Tutor/Contact directly. Their contact details can be found in the relevant departmental entry in the study abroad guide.
English Language Requirements
All students whose first language is not English must be sufficiently competent to ensure that their academic progress and ability to integrate socially while studying and living at UCL is not hindered by language difficulties. As a guide the minimum requirement for students undertaking full degree programmes at UCL is (IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 92).
It is assumed that Erasmus students are nominated by their home university on the basis of being sufficiently competent in English, and so proof of English language is not required at the initial application stage. Instead, students should demonstrate their English abilities in their statement of academic purpose.
If, on receipt of your application, the Admission Tutor is not convinced of your proficiency in the English language, they may request official certification. We will contact you directly in such instances.
