Junior Year Abroad (JYA) / Independent

For students who wish to come and study independently at UCL (i.e. not under an exchange agreement) for up to one year, or those students who wish to study at UCL for their Junior Year Abroad.

What Can I Study?

UCL is a multidisciplinary university with strength in depth across the academic spectrum. As an affiliate student at UCL, you have access to an extensive and flexible range of subject options. Whether you are looking to focus solely on your major area of academic study, explore a more interdisciplinary route or explore something completely new, UCL can support you.

You can see a full list of courses and departments available in our Study Abroad Guide.

When you apply to UCL you will normally apply to one department (a full list is given on page 1 of the Study Abroad Guide), where you will be expected to take at least 50% of your courses. Thereafter you can select the remainder of your courses from other departments as electives without the need for direct admission.

Admission Requirements

You should normally have completed or expect to complete two years of study at university level prior to entry to UCL.

A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3/4.0 (or equivalent) is expected, but some subject areas expect at least 3.5 and a very good background (A grades) in the relevant academic areas.  Admission Tutors need to be confident that you have sufficient academic background in their subject (and enthusiasm for it) to enable you to take classes alongside regular degree students.

For details of admission requirements (including any pre-requisites) specific to individual subject areas and courses, you should contact the relevant Affiliate Tutor/Contact directly. Their contact details can be found in the relevant departmental entry in the study abroad guide.
