About this degree

If you are looking to specialise in prosthodontics, this globally renowned programme at UCL will help you see your patient management in a whole new way. You will develop a high level of clinical skill for diagnosing, treating, and restoratively managing advanced and complex cases with an evidence-based approach.

The course covers all aspects of prosthodontic treatment, including fixed (both conventionally prepared and adhesive-retained designs), removable and implant-supported prostheses, for single missing teeth or partially or fully edentulous cases.

Our programme is unique as our trainees are exposed to all dental implant treatment phases, including planning, surgical placement, and restoration. Students also undertake laboratory work to appreciate its role in successful clinical outcomes. You will gain experience in both analogue and digital workflows in our new state-of-the-art Institute and hospital facilities.

You will work with UCL's experts including clinical academics, hospital consultants, technical instructors, specialist clinicians and guest lecturers, and be part of a small and focused international cohort, as places are limited.

Learning is accomplished through seminars, advanced diagnosis and treatment planning sessions, supervised clinical patient treatment, as well as supervised laboratory work.

Employability

The MClinDent programme is recommended for dentists aiming for specialist practice in prosthodontics.

Most of our graduates progress onto the specialist list in prosthodontics. Our graduates also gain the necessary training requirements to sit the Membership in Restorative Dentistry (MRD) or Prosthodontics (MPros) examination.

Career trajectories of recent graduates include private practice, hospital and community positions and services, as well as academic roles.

Networking

On this programme, there are many opportunities to network through our cross-disciplinary departments and research centres. We offer regular events where you can meet and hear from expert speakers and we encourage students to broaden their skills and expand their networks by attending and participating at conferences.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a mix of lectures, small-group teaching, journal clubs and one-to-one teaching in clinical and laboratory settings. Treatment of patients takes place under supervision in the new Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospital, which opened in 2019.

This is a blended-learning programme. Some elements are delivered face-to-face, and some are delivered online, with additional content on our virtual learning environment, Moodle. Workshops and laboratory work take place in the new Institute state-of-the-art pre-clinical and laboratory facilities and across UCL campus.

Research is done in collaboration with UCL and external partners, but especially UCL Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering.

The programme uses both summative and formative assessments with feedback provided at every opportunity.

We use various modes of assessment to reflect the diversity of student teaching and learning. Assessment is through written papers (MCQ, MSA, and essays), mock written, oral, and patient examination, supervised clinical work, workplace-based assessments, internal graduate appraisal, logbooks, and the dissertation. Assessments are a mixture of face-to-face and online.

The content of study varies through the years with most of the theoretical teaching occurring during the first year.

In a typical week, during weekdays, approximately 20% of the time is spent in lectures and tutorials, 60% in clinical-related activity (direct supervised patient treatment, laboratory work, consultant-led new patient clinics, treatment planning seminars) and 20% is dedicated to administrative, research and self-directed learning.

The first 10 weeks of the programme are conducted full-time as they set the stage for the rest of the year. Part-time students will also need to be available on a full-time basis during this period to fulfil these requirements.

The specific days vary throughout the four years of training depending on the modules and teaching and training needs as well as hospital clinical rotas.

Modules

You will take eight compulsory taught modules and complete a research dissertation.

In year one, you will complete six compulsory modules.

  • Clinical Science and Research Methods. A core module shared across the EDI trainees with the basic knowledge on topics such as biology, statistics, and oral health
  • Principles of Treatment Core Course (Conservative Dentistry, Implant Dentistry, Prosthodontics). This module establishes the knowledge and skills required to undertake clinical treatment and laboratory work. This is predominantly a hands-on, intensive course during the first 10 weeks of the programme. It requires full-time attendance from all students, including part-time students.
  • Interdisciplinary Aspects of Restorative Treatment. This module explores the importance and implications of the inter-relationship between prosthodontics and other clinical disciplines within dentistry such as periodontics, endodontics, paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, oral medicine, and oral surgery.
  • Fundamentals of Fixed and Implant Prosthodontics. This module provides a comprehensive overview of the use of fixed-tooth and implant treatment in prosthodontics, using an evidence-based approach.
  • Fundamentals of Removable Prosthodontics. This module develops a foundation for understanding the role and relevance of removable prosthodontics in managing edentulous and partially dentate patients. Graduates gain theoretical knowledge and clinical experience in removable prosthodontics. You will also learn laboratory techniques in fabricating removable appliances.

This includes patients from the hypodontia clinics, maxillofacial clinics, severe tooth structure loss and severe bone resorption in edentulous patients. This module builds on the clinical experience gained during the programme. The practical component is supported by tutorials in small groups to discuss and brainstorm effective management of complex cases.

It builds on the skills and experience gained in the first year of the programme. All prosthodontic principles are applied in supervised clinical sessions at the Eastman Dental Hospital.
  • Dissertation. This module includes (but is not limited to) research design and methodology, critical appraisal of the literature, data collection and submission of a dissertation. Students are supported by research supervisors throughout the project.

In year three, clinical work and academic teaching continue but this year is non-credit bearing. You will undertake a non-credit bearing compulsory taught module covering:

  • Formal education training, delivered through seminars and self-directed learning
