The Earthquake Engineering with Disaster Management MSc combines specialist earthquake engineering knowledge with an understanding of the social, economic and political impact of earthquake events in order to produce engineers that can provide holistic design solutions and be able to work in both engineering and disaster management roles.

What will I learn?

Graduates will be able to determine the vulnerability of ordinary structures to seismic actions; apply both current seismic codes and novel unconventional methodologies of seismic design, repair and assessment; and assess the adequacy, economic viability and life saving effectiveness of pre-event risk mitigation and post-event risk management solutions.

The programme has extensive links to industry through professional engineers and disaster managers who deliver lectures and seminars and support students on their research projects as industrial supervisors.

Students benefit from a field trip to the closest location of a recent major earthquake to study disaster management and the effects on the infrastructure.


Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and a research project (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) is offered.

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000–15,000 words.

Teaching and Learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, case studies, laboratory and computer classes, and a week-long field trip. The seminars are given by invited experts from the construction, bridge design, nuclear and re-insurance industries. Assessment is through examinations, presentations, coursework, written reports, poster presentations and the dissertation.

Funding

This programme qualifies for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme, suitable for nationals residing in Commonwealth developing countries who wish to study a one-year taught UK Masters programme.

The scholarship covers tuition fees and air fares to and from the UK.

Scholarships available for this department

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme   (CSSS)

This scholarship is to assist prospective Master's students from developing Commonwealth countries who are of excellent academic calibre but for financial reasons would not otherwise be able to afford to study in the United Kingdom. Students must not have previously studied for one year or more in a developed country and must hold the equivalent of a UK first- or upper second-class undergraduate degree. Students must have applied to study one of the 10 eligible Master's programmes. Students must return to their home country on completion of their degree.

SPDC Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship

For prospective Master's students from the Nigerian Delta States. Students must be applying for the Chemical Process Engineering MSc, the Civil Engineering MSc or the Mechanical Engineering MSc, and must not have aleady had the chance of studying in the UK or another developed country. Students must not be current or former employees of SPDC, the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies or Wider Perspectives Ltd, or be a the relative of a current employee, and must intend to return to Nigeria after completion of the degree. These awards are based on intellectual ability and leadership potential.

R.C. Vaughan Bursary

Founded in 1976 by Dr K.K. Gupta as a memorial to Mr R.C. Vaughan who was a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 1940 to 1952

A minimum of a second-class UK Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related discipline, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Extensive work experience covering related areas will be considered.

The programme aims to create a new type of global earthquake engineer; one that is able to take a holistic approach to earthquake engineering and disaster management. Graduates of the programme will have developed the specialist skills necessary for a career in the engineering sector and other areas that require knowledge and understanding of earthquake engineering and disaster risk management/mitigation principles. The MSc is accredited by the Institute of Civil Engineers as a further learning programme that can counts towards chartership.
