Earth Sciences


The Department of Earth Sciences is engaged in world-class research into the processes at work on and within the Earth and other planets. We accommodate the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction, which leads multi-disciplinary research, knowledge exchange and advanced-level teaching. The department houses the Aon Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre, the UK’s hub for geohazard research and knowledge exchange. We jointly run the Centre of Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM), which leads the Cryosat-2 satellite mission monitoring changes in polar ice. The department has strong links with resources and hazard risk industries with most graduates finding employment within academia or geoscience-related industries.
