This interdisciplinary programme takes an innovative approach to teaching of 'hard' science subjects by taking cultural heritage as its context. The aim is to develop a holistic understanding of state-of-the-art science among researchers and practitioners in order to develop the science leaders of the future.

What will I learn?
Students develop an holistic knowledge and scientific understanding of heritage objects, buildings and sites in the context of their historical, artistic, material, social and cultural environment. They question and reflect on research in the light of broader societal and environmental issues. By participating in interdisciplinary discourse with other researchers, and with a wider diverse public, graduates gain the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
Why should I study this degree at UCL?
The programme provides students with access to: renowned interdisciplinary teachers including internationally leading professionals; a state-of-the-art heritage science laboratory, equipped with benchtop and portable instrumentation for environmental and material studies; real-life case studies enabling discussion and reflection on complex issues of heritage science and related fields; leading heritage stakeholders, engaging students in challenging debates on the wider value of research.
Students benefit from a fully funded living laboratory experience, enabling them to develop their research idea in the field by interacting with heritage owners, managers, and visitors, and from opportunities for project placements with leading heritage organisations.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of four core modules (120 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits).
A Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) is offered.
All students undertake an independent research project which usually includes placement in a heritage institution. The project culminates in a dissertation of 10,000–12,000 words and an oral examination.
Teaching and Learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, problem solving classes, tutorials, laboratory and field work and independent project work. It includes a significant research component with intensively linked projects, field-based 'living laboratory' and a dissertation. Students present their research through a poster, a scientific paper, and a field work report.

The normal minimum qualifications are a second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.
A second acceptable qualification is a degree of lower than second-class Honours standard, or an equivalent overseas qualification, in a subject appropriate to the programme, plus extensive background and experience in the field. The latter implies considerable experience as a professional at a senior level. For applicants without a first degree or full professional membership, but with relevant and substantial work experience in the field, a special qualifying examination may be set. How to apply
Students are advised to apply as early as possible due to competition for places. Those applying for scholarship funding (particularly overseas applicants) should take note of application deadlines.

Who can apply?
The programme will appeal to science graduates and those who can demonstrate an aptitude for science. It is desirable for science graduates to have at least three years' work experience. Otherwise, a minimum of five years' professional experience in a heritage environment is preferable, with demonstrable experience in scientific research.
Heritage science delivers intellectual access to cultural heritage by enhancing knowledge of conservation, interpretation, research and management. Ideally, you may wish to follow this programme with a PhD in an interdisciplinary science subject, or be employed as a heritage professional with a research-based role.
