Healthcare Associated Infection Control MSc

The Healthcare Associated Infection Control MSc/Postgraduate Diploma at UCL is a new, distance learning modular course, designed to provide systematic training in the increasingly important area of the control and prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections.

Degree summary

What will I learn?

The programme provides a firm theoretical and practical foundation to the infection control practice. This includes strategies for infection control isolation precautions, health-care workers and related issues, organisation, roles, responsibilities and resource implications of effective infection control, developing management and communication skills, information technology and infection control.

Why should I study this degree at UCL?

The programme is administered by the Division of Infection and Immunity, and we have collaborative research links within UCL and with institutions throughout the world. Teaching is provided by members of the Research Department of Infection (clinical & academic), Institute of Child Health, Eastman Dental Institute, Hospital Infection Society and Health Protection Agency, together with invited guest speakers and external supervisors.

This interactive programme is taught using UCL's virtual learning environment, which provides structured video teaching, an informal virtual discussion forum, a private email link to your personal tutor, a virtual library with links to UCL's wide range of online journals and databases, and detailed personal feedback.

Degree structure

Availability: Flexible 2-5 years

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. MSc: Five core modules (75 credits) three optional modules (45 credits) and an independent research project (60 credits). Diploma: Four core modules (60 credits) and four optional modules (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, flexible study 2-5 years) is offered.

Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 10,000 words.

Teaching and Learning

The programme is taught through week long courses and the Internet. Though the majority of the programme is delivered via distance learning, support is offered through a supervisory structure of local and UCL-based tutors. Practical courses cover elements across the spectrum of the syllabus and offer the opportunity to meet other students and teachers on the programme.

Entry and application

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a minimum of a second-class UK Bachelor's degree in biomedical or life sciences or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. In addition, applicants must have an active professional involvement in the control of hospital infections. It is a prerequisite of the programme that all students have regular access to a personal computer and the Internet and have acquired basic skills in their use.

The programme is designed for healthcare professionals who are employed in posts with infection control activity and responsibilities, and wish to gain a postgraduate qualification and specialist training in this field. It is offered to graduates with a degree in a scientific, nursing or medical discipline, or with suitable clinical experience.
