Web Science and Big Data Analytics MSc

While transforming our lives dramatically, the World Wide Web also generates many pressing challenges to our global societies. This brand new programme provides students with a knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles and technological components of the World Wide Web, preparing them for a career in scientific research or within Internet-based industries.

Degree summary

What will I learn?

Students will gain a detailed knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles and technological components of the World Wide Web, ranging from (multimedia) information processing, information search and retrieval, data mining and knowledge acquisition, large-scale distributed data analytics, to e-commerce and their business and economic models, and to the latest concepts of participatory web and social networks and the underlying networks science.

Degree structure

Availability: Full-time 1 year

MSc students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three option modules (45 credits) and the research dissertation (60 credits).

  • Three elective modules from available UCL Computer Science programmes.

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a substantial dissertation.

Teaching and Learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials and seminars. Lectures are often supported by laboratory work with help from demonstrators. Student performance is assessed by unseen written examinations, coursework and the dissertation.

Entry and application

Entry requirements

A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor's degree in a highly quantitative subject such as computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering or the physical sciences, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Students should also have some experience with a programming language such as Matlab, Java or python. Appropriate industrial experience may also be taken into account.

Applications are accepted between 1 November and 31 July, however students are advised to apply as early as possible due to competition for places. Those applying for scholarship funding (particularly overseas applicants) should take note of application deadlines.

The MSc programme is suitable for students with a general science and engineering background who wish to learn all aspects of quantitative web science needed for the development of large scale web eco systems and information seeking and quantitative data analysis tools.
