We strive to ensure that the facilities and services we offer are continually developed and maintained to support your needs. The resources described here are reinforced by the remarkable resources, events and opportunities on offer in the wider London community.

Computer and IT facilities

The user ID and password issued to you on enrolment will provide access to a wide range of IT facilities provided in departments, open-access PC workrooms and student residences. This includes an allocation of your own UCL email address and access to over 100 general and specialist software packages, using a secure central filestore with automatic backup. Many departments also have their own computer facilities to meet specialised requirements. UCL's wireless network (RoamNet) provides you with secure web and email access in many locations across UCL. You can access IT training through scheduled sessions or online courses.

E-learning

UCL has a range of e-learning tools which provide access to lecture materials; communication with fellow students and tutors through online discussions; documents created collaboratively using wikis; web-based resources in text, video, audio and image formats; online tests and assignment submission. UCL also has a growing online media presence, including selected lectures and guest presentations on iTunes U.

UCL Library

UCL Library Services is committed to supporting the excellence of teaching, learning, research and clinical practice by providing a high quality, integrated and innovative service. Facilities include a main library and 15 specialist subject libraries, with subject librarians available to advise you on getting the most from our resources.

In addition to over two million books and subscriptions to around 12,000 journals, our electronic library services include access to web resources, e-books and e-journals, databases and past examination papers.

UCL Language Centre

The UCL Language Centre offers excellent facilities for language learning, whether for academic and professional purposes, or for enjoyment.

Evening courses in Arabic, Dutch, French, German, modern Greek, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Kazakh, Latin, Mandarin, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Welsh are offered. You can support your learning through use of the Self-Access Centre, equipped with a CD-ROM laboratory, satellite television, interactive videos, an audio and video library and a selection of reference materials.

The UCL Language Centre also offers English language courses of varying durations for international students as well as in-sessional English support classes.

Museums and collections at UCL

UCL's diverse museums and collections hold a wealth of objects, artworks, specimens and images which form a resource of international importance available for academic research purposes. In addition some collections are open to the public for general interest and enjoyment. The collections comprise:

  • The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology
  • The Grant Museum of Zoology
  • The UCL Art Collections
  • The Galton Collection (of scientific instruments, papers and personal memorabilia of Sir Francis Galton, pioneer of genetics)
  • The Institute of Archaeology Collections
  • The Geology Collections
  • The Ethnographic Collections
  • The Science Collections.

Furthermore, the UCL Library Special Collections hold significant manuscripts, archives and rare books, and UCL also houses the UK's only Regional Planetary Image Facility which holds NASA images and data returned from space missions.
