Graduate Life: The UCL Graduate Community

All graduate students at UCL are automatically members of the UCL Union, and the Postgraduate Association Executive (PGAE) represents graduate students both on College committees and in the Union. The Union is also affiliated to the National Postgraduate Committee, the national body for graduate representation, which is essentially the graduate equivalent of the National Union of Students.

Working with the Graduate School, the PGAE supports UCL's 7,000-strong graduate community. Being part of the UCL Union encourages contact between undergraduates and graduates, resulting in the participation of graduate students in, for example, inter-society sports competitions.

The main aim of the Postgraduate Association Executive is to bring the graduate student community together, and there is an Entertainments Officer who organises a selection of events for all graduates and their friends. Social events include the Welcome Party at the beginning of the academic year.

Close links have been developed between the Graduate School and the Union to provide a means by which students can implement new ideas and suggestions in order to maintain a constantly improving working environment through which research may flourish, as well as providing opportunities for social interaction.

The Graduate School also provides financial support to departmental graduate societies and student-led interdisciplinary seminar groups. All these are designed to promote friendships and interaction across subject boundaries.
