Funding

One MA and three PhD AHRC Scholarships. Approximately 15 scholarships for EU or non-EU IMESS students. SSEES Foundation Scholarship for PhD study. The Victor and Rita Swoboda Memorial Fund Scholarship for a PhD in Ukrainian Studies. PhD and MRes studentships may be available through the ESRC Doctoral Training Scheme.

SSEES has multi-disciplinary expertise across the humanities and social sciences, including history, economics and business, political science, international relations and security studies, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, film, gender studies, linguistics, literature and thought. Seminar series, workshops and major international conferences are run by SSEES’s five research centres:

  • Centre for European Politics, Security and Integration
  • Centre for South-East European Studies
  • Centre for Russian Studies, which includes the Russian Cinema Research Group
  • Centre for the Study of Central Europe
  • Centre for the Study of Economic and Social Change in Europe

and by the SSEES-led inter-university Centre for East European Language-Based Area Studies (CEELBAS). The multi-disciplinary strength of SSEES and CEELBAS also facilitates comparative interdisciplinary and collaborative research.

Entry requirements

A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree, and usually a Master’s degree in a relevant subject, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Students intending to seek Research Council funding are required to undertake a Master’s degree first.

Career prospects

Recent graduates have found employment as editors for large publication houses such as Fontanka Publications; as interpreters for organisations such as the National Register of Public Service Interpreters; as researchers for government departments and think-tanks including the Samsung Economics Research Institute; or have pursued careers in academia at the London School of Economics and Political Science as well as UCL.
