"I chose UCL largely for the four-year CoMPLEX PhD programme but also because I wanted to be back in London after four years in Cambridge! In coming here I was confident that I would find an exciting project that would allow me to bring my background in physics to the study of an interesting problem in the life sciences. I developed the summer project from my MRes year into my PhD. I’ve been using fluorescent tags to study the behaviour of a particular neurotransmitter receptor found in the brain which is important for controlling neuronal activity. Being able to directly watch these molecules moving around (with a microscope) is very exciting. Neuroscience is very strong at UCL and by supplementing experimental neuroscience with modelling techniques, we can get closer to integrating information and finding out how the brain works." |
