Disabled students
UCL is working towards improving its accommodation provision for disabled students. All newly built residences will have facilities for disabled students, and wherever possible adaptations have been and will continue to be made to older residences. Despite this, UCL’s provision for wheelchair accessible accommodation is limited. The following residences have accommodation that might be suitable for students with restricted mobility:
- Langton Close
- Frances Gardner
- Ian Baker
- Goldsmid
- Hawkridge
- James Lighthill
- John Dodgson
- Schafer Houses
Some of these residences can be a fair distance from other parts of UCL which may need to be taken into consideration. Car parking arrangements can usually be made where necessary.
Students should discuss their requirements with UCL Student Residences and/or UCL Student Disability Services, at an early stage, before completing the application form, to obtain further advice. Where appropriate a preliminary visit to view the accommodation can be arranged.
Students who have a diagnosed mental health condition which they feel may affect their study can also get other support from Student Disability Services. The staff there provide advice on a range of issues such as applying for disabled student allowances, making special examination arrangements and can liaise with departments on your behalf. Student Disability Services also recruits a number of mentors who provide weekly one-to-one support and advice to students on how to cope with academic work, help with planning and prioritising your workload and other study skills.
UCL Student Disability Services can be contacted on telephone +44 (0)20 7679 0100 or via email at disability@ucl.ac.uk. See also: www.ucl.ac.uk/disability
Students who indicate on their application form that they have a disability, illness or medical condition will be informed by the Student Residences Office, once they have been offered a place in a UCL residence, that a Risk Assessment will be carried out by the Residence Manager within one week of arrival.
