Who we are
The Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching (CALT) works with UCL staff to collaboratively develop, support and disseminate good practice in teaching and learning.
The importance of gathering data
In support of this objective, it is important that we have up-to-date and relevant information on what being a student at UCL is really about. The best way for us to do this is to directly gather data from students through surveys, interviews and focus groups. We rely on students’ engagement with these activities to ensure that that we have as complete a picture as possible.
For students, the incentive to take part is that the information we gather will be used to improve the teaching that you receive first-hand.
The field of educational research
UCL is a research-intensive university. As you begin to engage with your course of study you will be exposed to cutting edge, leading research in your respective fields. In the same way, CALT uses educational research to influence its own activities and by completing this survey, you will be contributing to that research.
About this study
The purpose of this study is to look at student motivation, expectations and interests at the start of their university life.
Anonymity and opting out
Anonymity is important when conducting research. Participants need to feel comfortable enough to give honest answers to questions. With this in mind, any information that you provide will be kept anonymous so that you cannot be identified by the responses you give. Email addresses will only be used by the researchers to contact you about the research and will not be given out to anyone or reproduced elsewhere.
Another important facet of research is that respondents need to be aware that they can withdraw from the study at any time. You also need to be aware that you are not obliged to continue with the study should you wish not to. Opting out will not remove your name from the prize draw. If you would like to opt out of the survey, would like to discuss this study, or require further information, please contact me directly. My contact details are as follows:
