Martina Vojtkova, MSc Public Policy, 2009–2010.

Shortly after graduating, I started working as a research assistant for the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), whose London office is situated rather improbably right next door to the SPP.

3ie is an international NGO established in 2009 devoted to increasing development effectiveness through better use of evidence in low- and middle-income countries. The organisation funds rigorous impact evaluations and systematic reviews of development programmes and promotes evidence-based policy-making in international development.

I joined the 3ie’s systematic reviews programme in September 2010. Since then, I have co-authored a major systematic review on the effectiveness of Farmer Field Schools and I am currently working on a new systematic review comparing the effectiveness of different education interventions on learning outcomes. I also co-authored methodological papers on different approaches to evidence synthesis and contributed to the development of a new evidence synthesis methodology – the evidence gap map. I led the development of an HIV/AIDS evidence gap map which I recently presented to the UNAIDS. In addition to the above, I have provided quality assurance for several systematic reviews and contributed to the development of a database of systematic reviews of effectiveness in international development, co-funded by the UK Department for International Development. Finally, I was offered the position of managing editor of the Campbell Collaboration’s International Development Coordinating Group and currently oversee a portfolio of 30 systematic review projects.

Needless to say, the knowledge and skills acquired during my MSc Public Policy degree have been incredibly useful in my work and they have given me the opportunity to pursue my interests in international development at the professional level. My thanks to all the SPP staff and good luck to all the new and current students.
