MONUMENT TO QUEEN ELENA, LARGO SEGGIOLA
Queen Elena, the Montenegran wife of King Vittorio Emanuele III, visited the stricken city of Messina in the days following the earthquake of 28 December 1908. Much was made of the Queen’s image as a ‘humble sister of charity’ in the earthquake's aftermath. It is that image that is reproduced in the statue.
