MESSINA'S GRAN CAMPOSANTO: THE MONUMENTAL CEMETERY

Messina’s Gran Camposanto has seen better days.

Inaugurated in 1872 as an expression of civic pride and patriotism, it once rivalled the famous cemeteries in Milan and Genoa for the accolade of being the country’s finest monumental cemetery. It was badly damaged by both the earthquake of 1908 and by Allied bombs during the Second World War. Since the war it has suffered from neglect.

In Messina , many people point to the Gran Camposanto as evidence of the city’s memory deficit.
