Additional Information

UCL

UCL is the largest of the London universities. UCL is consistently rated as one of the top multi-faculty universities, both in the UK and in the world, and has an annual turnover in excess of £500m.

UCL is one of the UK’s premier research institutions. It has immense research strength across all areas and is developing numerous inter-disciplinary research ventures. Located in the Bloomsbury area, UCL has excellent facilities and the research resources available in this part of London (the British Library, for example) are unrivalled in the UK.

The Philosophy Department

The Department is housed principally in 19 Gordon Square, a mid-19th century house built by Thomas Cubitt, which is located in the heart of Bloomsbury. The Department currently has 14 full-time, and two part-time, permanent teaching staff, one full-time temporary staff, and two departmental administrators.

For administrative purposes, the Department is located in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Academic links are not bound by the location in this particular Faculty, and academic staff have links with colleagues in many other departments in UCL.
UCL is widely considered to have one of the leading philosophy departments in the UK. It has particular research strengths in the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of perception, metaphysics, epistemology, moral and political philosophy, and Kantian and post-Kantian continental philosophy.

In the UK’s 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the UCL Philosophy Department obtained the highest percentage (45%) of research activity rated 4* (‘world leading’) of any philosophy department in the country. The department’s overall quality profile was 45% at 4*, 30% at 3*, 20% at 2* and 10% at 1*.

(see: www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2008/dec/18/rae-2008-philosophy)

The Department has great advantages as a centre of research activity. The extraordinary number of research seminars, talks and lectures that take place in the various London colleges, the Institute of Philosophy in the University of London, the Institute of Classical Studies, the Aristotelian Society and the Royal Institute of Philosophy, offer a wealth of opportunities.

Teaching and Learning

The Department teaches three UCL graduate degree programmes, and five undergraduate programmes.
The graduate programmes are the MA, M.Phil Stud and PhD. The Department has a thriving research student community, currently with around 40 research students. The department has a strong placement record: recent PhDs have secured posts at such places as Oxford, Cambridge, Sheffield, Manchester, Edinburgh, Reading, Keele, UCL School of Public Policy, York, Stirling and Roehampton (see: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/philosophy/alumni/placement-record.htm).
The undergraduate programmes are the Single-Subject degree in Philosophy and Combined studies with Economics, French, Greek, and History of Art.  The total annual undergraduate intake is about 50 students for the Single-Subject degree and about 15 for the Joint degrees. The Department also makes a number of its courses available to students in other UCL Departments.
