Current research:
My PhD dissertation examines and criticises Gareth Evans's idea that there can be 'mock thoughts', i.e. that it can seem to one as if one is having an object-dependent thought but that this is not the case.

PhD Akosua Bonsu Current research: My PhD is focused on areas in the philosophy of mind. More specifically, I work on the correct way to conceptualise the relationship between the self and self-conscious emotions such as pride, guilt, jealousy and shame. A proper understanding of this relationship helps us make better sense of a range of real life cases. For example, understanding the nature of the narcissistic tendencies characteristic of these emotions can help us to better understand psychopathic behaviours, relations of power and dominance and the nature of love and friendship. Understanding how the self-conscious emotions operate allows us to get a grip on the particular ways in which moods modify experience and impact on the reasons which move us. My research requires me to go into a range of topics such as self-consciousness, emotionality, the self and the nature and role of guilt, shame, pride, love etc. I am very interested in what a number of thinkers have said about these topics. Particularly, I am interested in the work of Aristotle, Sartre, Spinoza and Hume. Email

Frege, Ryle, Wittgenstein, Austin)

Current research: My thesis gives an account of the nature of linguistic understanding from the standpoint of rational psychology. Understanding an utterance of a speaker puts us in a quite specific epistemic position. I am looking at the question of what is cognitively required for us to be in the epistemic position we occupy when we understand the utterances of others.

My current research focuses on a number of interrelated issues concerning visual experiences: what features are distinctive to them vis-à-vis other psychological phenomena with contents about the visible environment; how experiencing relates to seeing; under what ontological category do visual experiences fall. As a side interest, I'm also working on some fairly unorthodox reading of Berkeley and Hume on perception.
