Dr Tom Stern

Research Interests

I have two main research interests. First, nineteenth-century German philosophy, especially Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. One way or another, most of my work on Nietzsche has been trying to work out what, if anything, we can conclude about his positive ethical commitments. Second, aesthetics, especially the philosophy of theatre. My book, Philosophy and Theatre (Routledge, 2013), examines a series of philosophical questions or concerns which arise in relation to theatre. For more information about my research, and to download some of my papers, you can go to my website: http://sterntom.com/

In the last few years, I have taught on Plato, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Adorno as well as a graduate class on the philosophy of theatre. I have also developed a workshop on ‘Rhetoric and Presentation Skills’ which uses ideas from ancient rhetorical practices to teach graduate students how to give philosophy presentations.
