Professor Lucy O'Brien

Research Interests

I work in the philosophy of mind and action, focussing in particular on self-consciousness and self-knowledge. I am the author of Self-Knowing Agents (OUP 2007) and co-editor, with Matthew Soteriou, of Mental Actions (OUP 2009). I am currently working on interpersonal, rather than personal, self-consciousness and the nature of the self-conscious emotions.  From Autumn 2015 I will be the co-editor, with A.W. Moore, of the journal Mind. I supervise research students working on a number of topics within the philosophy of mind and action.

For students taking a BA in Philosophy I teach a second year Intermediate course on Knowledge. I teach a third year Advanced Philosophy of Mind course. This is a triple coded course and is open to MA and MPhil students.  I variously teach the MA Introduction to Epistemology and Methodology, and the MA Research Preparation Seminar. I teach Graduate Research seminars in the Philosophy of Mind covering different topics. In recent years I have taught on First Person Reference, and Irrationality in Action, Self-Conscious Emotions,  and on Interpersonal Self-Consciousness.
