Title: Plotinus on the freedom of the One

Talk Abstract. In this talk, I discuss Plotinus's claim that the One is free. I explain the assumptions about freedom that lie behind this claim, and how they relate to earlier Greek views on freedom, and I discuss the difficulties Plotinus is trying to address in defending this view that the ultimate first principle of everything is free. The most important text for this is Plotinus's Ennead VI.8 (especially chapters 7-21).
