Benjamin Fardell

Interests: Ethics, Value theory, Practical reason, Political philosophy.

I’m currently interested in what it could mean for something to be ‘priceless’. In the face of the highly influential aggregative picture of individual practical reasoning, this is hard. Importantly, the issue affects how we conceive of well-being, which I believe must import qualitative and not just quantitative distinctions in value. These might be expressed in terms of some notion of need, as opposed to what is unnecessary.

My research aims to demonstrate how an account of persons as animals might helpfully contribute to other debates in which an account of personhood might be expected to play a key theoretical role (e.g. in value theory and the philosophy of mind). I'm currently looking into the role that an account of animal nature might play in the interpretation and evaluation of other people's evaluative perspectives, and into related ideas concerning a distinctively human second nature/ethical upbringing.'

Andrew Knox Interests: Political Philosophy, Ethics, Metaethics, Philosophy of History.

(academia.edu profile)
Michael Markunas  Interests: Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Perception and Neuroscience. Also interested in Nietzsche and Wittgenstein.
Rowan Mellor  I am currently working on a study of collective responsibility. Recently, important philosophical work has been conducted on both individual moral responsibility and the logic and metaphysics of plurals. My research attempts to bring this work together to provide a novel account of collective responsibility: moral responsibility for an action/outcome which is ascribed to a plurality of agents, rather than a single agent. I believe that this account can help resolve problem cases in which something morally wrong appears to have been done, but where it seems inappropriate to criticise individuals for their actions. Such cases seem prevalent in the modern world e.g. climate change, consumer patterns which perpetuate unacceptable working conditions etc.
