Sofie Andersen

Degree: BA
Year: 2004

I moved across the road to SOAS where I have just completed an MA in Japanese Culture and Cinema. I spent all summer writing my dissertation on notions of body identity in Japanese animation which basically meant I got to watch a lot of cartoons and call it 'research'. Life is good. I am off to Japan to teach English from April, and seriously considering coming back to SOAS for a PhD after that. I would love to hear from other 2004 alumni.

Since leaving UCL, I have devoted my working life to the theory and practice of that three-letter thing ending in 'x' that is so important to all of us.

That's right - tax.

After three years in the civil service, I spent 10 years in private sector consultancy. I recently rejoined that sector after 9 years in banking, in order to make my fortune before decrepitude overtakes me.

Graduated: 1995

After leaving UCL I went up to Oxford to study for a DPhil at Brasennose College. I completed my thesis, Ethical Practice and Objective Reasons: Kantian and Wittgensteinian Themes in the Objectivity of Ethical Reasons, in 2000.
Before finishing my thesis I had decided that I wanted to leave academia and pursue a career as a barrister, and so two more years of study followed, first completing the Diploma in Law at City University and then the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law. After completing a year's pupillage at 11 King's Bench Walk Chambers I was taken on as a tenant there. I am now enjoying practice as a barrister, mostly in the fields of employment and education law.

Graduated: 1990

Post BA I studied law at UCL. My specialism is environmental law and the law of environmental protection. I am now a solicitor working for the Government Legal Service in Whitehall. I was in a private practice until 3 years ago but the lure of GLS environmental law work, which is really EU international law based, proved too tempting.
About to get married, well technically sign the Civil Partnership Register, and we're expecting our first baby in January 2007.
Still in touch with several student and academic friends from 1987 - 1990 and still good friends with a couple of them.

Mary Hall (née Burger)

Degree: BA Philosophy
Graduated: 1985

Having taken Finals whilst 'big with child', I spent several years happily married to a UCH medical graduate before being widowed in 1989. I have spent the intervening years bringing up my three children.and yes, philosophy does have uses in child-rearing. 'Please', for instance is a necessary but not sufficient condition, NOT a magic word. Remarried at the end of last year and it looks as though I am about to embark on a second round of motherhood. I am soon to finish an OU degree in Mathematical Science which I have been studying in between organic gardening and family management. It would be good to hear of other oldies like me who graduated before 1990.

Degree: BA Philosophy

After graduation, I continued as a freelance journalist, moving from the sociological end of children's media into editorial consultancy in a range of disciplines, commercial, non-profit and public sector. Currently employed in internal comms at a FTSE-100 insurer (so yes, I sell insurance to insurance salesmen). I am in possession of plausible-sounding marxian rationalisations for this engagement. I'm not writing anything at present - just enjoying family life. D. H. Kerby
Affiliate Student
Year: 1985

I am a poet. I've written a book, IT FELL FROM THE SKY, IT MUST BE OURS: A POEM FOR PEACE WITH JUSTICE. It is out on Blitz Publications of Bangladesh. I am also a writer of political essays, or, to be more pedestrian about it, journalism. I recently spent eight days indigent in Bangkok, due to the omissions of the United States Embassy there, but I am trying to turn the other cheek; I was baptized in the Anglican Church several years ago, which will come as a surprise to those of you who remember me as an atheistic Marxist. I've decided that there is no contradiction in believing in a loving and forgiving God and in a moral duty to elevate suffering humanity and to value social justice. I'm working on my second book, a collection of poems about a year I recently spent living in Paris, which may include some material written after the Bangkok ordeal. I may be one of the few alumni of UCL's philosophy department who has not served in a country's military who can say that he has survived an attempt on his life, and I do not refer to being abandoned to penury by America's outpost in Thailand!

Martin Sykes-Haas

Degree: BA Philosophy and MA
Graduated: BA1998, MA 2000

I am presently working part time in resource development/fundraising for an NPO called Bimkom- Planners for Planning Rights who educate, lobby and advise to ensure that property rights are properly respected, encourage distributive justice in planning resources, proper equality before the law in planning matters etc. as well as stimulating dialogue among the planning and architecture community as to the nature of citizens' rights in matters of planning, building and so on. Unfortunately, here in Israel some communities 'are more equal than others' when it comes to land distribution and so on, as well as being in the possession of more political and/or economic clout. We have a lot to do!

The rest of my time is spent looking after my yummy 7 month old daughter Eden, tidying up after my wife Hannah, attempting to write a novel and avoiding busses.

Robert Todd

Degree: BA Philosophy and Greek
Graduated: 1965

About to retire from the Dept of Classics at University of British Columbia where I have taught in Classics since 1969 after taking a PhD at Princeton. I was the first student to do the Greek/Philosophy joint hons. degree at UCL and in Philosophy was taught by Bernard Williams and then Myles Burnyeat after Bernard left for Bedford.

I have specialised in Greek philosophy, especially physical theory and the Aristotelian tradition, translating various works from late antiquity including two for the series on ancient commentators on Aristotle edited by Richard Sorabji. My colleague in Philosophy in Vancouver for many years was James Dybikowski; my contemporary at UCL who took his doctorate with Bernard Williams and taught back at UCL 1973-5.
