The Role of the Personal Tutor
The
purpose of a personal tutoring system is to provide all students with
at least one member of staff who gets to know them as individuals, who
keeps an eye on their overall academic progress and who is concerned
for their general welfare.

A university is an adult community in which students are expected to show a considerable degree of independence - to take responsibility for their studies and for their own lives. Students, in their turn, want to be treated as adults and to be seen to be self-sufficient. Many, however, are quite young and away from home for the first time. They are also coping with new styles of learning and teaching without the level of supervision and guidance customary at school.
