GP Tutors Conference 2018

The theme of our annual GP tutor conference this year is 'Quality in General Practice Medical Education'. We will use this day to explore this topic from a range of perspectives relevant to being a GP and teaching medical students in general practice. There have been a number of recent initiatives aiming to make visible the excellent work that is done in general practice, as well as seeking to ensure teaching in this setting is of excellent quality. The Wass Report publication last year addressed concerns about recruiting trainees into general practice careers and highlighted a number of ways in which medical schools and the general practice profession can encourage students to pursue this career and tackle historical stigmas within the hidden curriculum. The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) has also been introduced as a means of measuring quality across higher education. There is also a growing field of work aiming to maximise the relevance of research to enhance clinical quality of care and education in this setting, as well as seeking to embed research knowledge into practice and policy innovation and change. This conference will provide a stimulating mix of discussion and presentations relevant to all GPs interested or involved in delivery of medical education in the general practice setting. We are delighted that invited student and patient user groups will also be contributing to discussions during the day.

Is Improvement a Science?

Many doctors do not have the knowledge or skills to use the so-called 'Improvement Science' methods which are commonplace in many other sectors. Advocates of systematic improvement claim that these methods provide the answer to the persistent quality problems found in the NHS. Critics challenge this enthusiasm and ask for evidence that improvement science is indeed a science-based activity. In this session Professor Martin Marshall will explore the promise, the achievements and the challenges of the science of improvement.

Bridging divides and borders: Primary Care Medical Education can now lead to create a workforce appropriate for future health care.

Future health care needs will inevitably be different. 21st century medical education must change to address this. The Wass report makes important recommendations to ensure medical schools move to improve the image of general practice as a career choice. Much of the challenge lies in lack of visibility of general practice ironically both as a specialty within health care delivery and as an attractive flexible and interesting career. Quality primary care education undoubtedly has a major role to play. Traditional "divides" and "borders" must be overcome to move forward in supporting general practitioners to take a prime position across the continuum of education. Professor Valerie Wass will explore how GP tutors can work to raise the status of general practice and ensure we recruit the brightest and best students to meet the needs of our patients.
