The Research Department of Primary Care and Population Health (PCPH)

Population

PCPH was formed in 2008 when the former Department of Primary Care and Population Sciences at Royal Free and University College London Medical School divided into two independent but closely linked Research Departments i.e. Primary Care & Population Health, and Infection & Population Health. The head of our department is Professor Irwin Nazareth.

Our department's main strategic aims are:

  • To develop and deliver high quality programmes of undergraduate teaching (including community-based teaching) and postgraduate education within the broad scope of primary care and population health.
  • To undertake a programme of internationally competitive, multi-disciplinary research addressing the management and prevention of disease in individuals and populations in areas of priority to the health of the public.

We value our multidisciplinary approach to both research and teaching with expertise within the department including clinical primary care, epidemiology, medical statistics, medical sociology and health psychology. We have particular methodological strengths in quantitative and qualitative research and analysis of large clinical databases e.g. GPRD and THIN, trial methodology. The department works closely with the MRC Clinical Trials Unit and the General Practice Research Framework (GPRF). Together with the GPRF and the UCL Mental Health Sciences Unit we run PRIMENT, a fully registered UK CRC Clinical Trials Unit, one of the few in the UK with expertise in the design, conduct and analysis of trials and other large, well designed studies in primary care and mental health research.
