Highlights from the Project Paphlagonia survey

The city of Çankırı. The tree-clad citadel can be seen in the mid-right. Below that lie the houses of the old town, while in the foreground are modern apartment blocks. Çankırı has always been the most important city of Inner Paphlagonia. It was probably called Hanhana in Hittite times and certainly called Gangra in the Iron Age and Gangra-Germanikopolis in Roman-Byzantine times.
