Course Aims

The aims of the course are:

  • to review the basic sound system of contemporary English (vowels, consonants, stress), focussing primarily on British but with reference to General American
  • to develop fluency: phrasing, linking, rhythm, accenting and intonation
  • to give structured practical feedback on each participant’s speech (within the group setting), including individual notes for continuing practice after the course

Course Overview

This is a practically-based course primarily for those who have already taken one of our short courses in pronunciation. Previous material will be reviewed and expanded, with a focus on more native-like fluency in connected speech.

The course will also include:

• include new developments in English, including intonational developments since classic 'RP'

• develop awareness of informational packaging in English, which can enhance effective communication, teaching and presentation-giving.

• involve interactive participation, giving students the opportunity to improve their language skills and confidence.

• provide those participants who teach with ideas and resources for English pronunciation teaching, including use of the internet. Discussion is encouraged throughout.
