Athena SWAN and Career Development

The mission of our Career Development, Equality and Diversity (CDED) Committee is to provide ample and equal opportunities for career development to all staff and students in PALS.

We hold an Athena SWAN silver award for our work on advancing the careers of women scientists. The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good gender equality practices in higher education. The charter is a gender equality framework used across the sector. Participating institutions and departments use the charter to improve gender representation, progression and the working environment for all staff.

The Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (PALS) has been awarded an Athena SWAN silver award three times (2009, 2013, 2017) for its work on advancing the careers of women scientists.

Athena SWAN awards are made to universities or their departments that have shown significant progress in addressing the imbalance in career progressions of women vs men in science, engineering and technology.

Because PALS comprises seven research departments, this represents a significant step towards UCL's goal of achieving an institution-wide silver award.
