The National Heart Failure Audit published its sixth annual report on 21 November 2013.
The audit showed that mortality rates for patients with acute heart failure fell for the first time, both in hospital and following discharge. This is despite a patient group with similar characteristic across the two years.
Despite this evident progress, the report shows that there is wide variation in care depending on ward of treatment, and also between hospitals. This year’s audit highlights the urgent need for more patients who are admitted to hospital with heart failure to receive specialist care, preferably on a cardiology ward.
