What were your reasons for requesting an alumni mentor?

I'm currently developing my interest and experience in the consultancy sector, and wanted to take my knowledge to the next level. It's invaluable hearing from people in the industry, especially those with a similar academic background, so when I heard about the UCL Alumni Online Community I thought it would be an amazing opportunity.

How often are you in contact and what do you talk about?

I had an extensive phone call with my mentor, during which he talked about his own experiences and gave me some excellent advice on my next steps. It was genuinely really interesting and far beyond what I'd expected! He has since offered to help me on future applications and I know that if I have any questions I could always contact him for his insight.

What are the benefits of having a mentor?

Mentors can give you a different angle on the industry and provide a tailored insight into what you could (or should) do next. It's a great scheme to get involved in if you're just starting out, or if you want to challenge yourself further than the standard careers advice. It also means you can meet inspiring, friendly people in your future industry!
