7 things to do in London during the summer break

29 July 2016

The start of the new academic year is less than two months away, but summer isn't over quite yet! Whether you're enjoying a break from study or still hard at work, check out these seven ways to spend some of your free time while you're in London.

Summer Thames

1. Outdoor cinema

What better way to spend a balmy summer's evening in the capital than watching a timeless favourite or recent blockbuster at an outdoor big screen? The Rooftop Film Club offers a cinema experience with spectacular rooftop views, while the Luna Cinema screens at iconic London landmarks. Also check out the Nomad Cinema, which offers a student discount.

2. London lidos

Olympic fever got you feeling sporty? Whether you want to get fit, relax or cool off, take a dip in one of London's many lidos. Fairly local to UCL's main campus, Parliament Hill Lido is Grade II-listed and features a unique stainless steel liner. Otherwise, Tooting Bec Lido boasts the largest open-air swimming pool in the UK, and London Fields Lido is heated all year round.

3. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Visit the home of UCL's upcoming new campus, UCL East, and enjoy a full day out while you're at it by taking the short trip to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Get a bird's-eye view of where we'll be located from the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit, and if you're feeling brave you can take a 40-second journey down to the bottom via the world's longest tunnel slide! A student discount is available.

4. Volunteering

One of the most interesting and rewarding ways to spend the summer, volunteering offers the opportunity to gain invaluable experience, often with flexibility. The UCLU Volunteering Services Unit has compiled a list of summer opportunities, including mentorship, community support, fundraising and more. There are also volunteering opportunities at some great one-off events.

5. Museums

London's museums are among the best in the world, and this summer is a great time to pay them a visit. 'Sensational butterflies' at the Natural History Museum allows you to come face-to-face with a range of tropical butterflies, while artefacts from sunken ancient Egyptian cities are on show at the British Museum for the first time. UCL Museums are also hosting a range of activities.

6. The South Bank

Nowhere says 'London' quite like the South Bank, and there's plenty happening this summer to make it well worth a visit. The Southbank Centre is offering a packed programme of art, music, dance, cabaret and circus, while the Tate Modern's striking new building, the Switch House, is a must-see. Plus, there's the added benefit of some stunning views as you stroll along the Thames.

7. Food markets

If you're a passionate foodie, London's food markets are the ideal summer stop off. Borough Market, London's oldest food market, is popular among Londoners, selling everything from handmade cakes and pastries to international cuisine. And if you're looking for something more local to campus, try the Real Food Market at King's Cross or student favourite the Bloomsbury Farmers' Market.
