Opportunity to take part in UCL’s institutional Athena SWAN Silver award renewal

UCL is putting together a new Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team (SAT) to lead the renewal of its Silver institutional Athena SWAN award in November 2018.

The group will report to the strategic 50:50 gender equality group and will be responsible for putting together the new application and action plan, with support from the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Team.

The SAT will consist of a broad mixture of staff from both academic and professional services roles, different genders, different career stages and different disciplinary areas, so that UCL’s gender equality policy and practice is informed by a diverse range of perspectives. In addition to seeking individuals who are enthusiastic and have some personal or professional interest in gender equality, we are looking for representation of:

  • Staff at each stage of the academic career pipeline
  • Professional services staff at junior, middle management and senior levels
  • Clinical staff
  • STEMM and non-STEMM areas
  • Students
  • A critical mass of men (at least 30%)
  • Staff on different contract types
  • Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) people
  • Other minority groups such as LGBTQ+ people and Disabled people

This is a prestigious role and an excellent opportunity to influence the overall culture of UCL. In terms of the time commitment, members will be expected to attend a meeting at least every 2 months leading up to the submission as well as contribute ideas and dedicate time to leading a particular area of the application e.g. work-life balance. This is a significant enabling commitment and should therefore be agreed and recognised in your appraisal and workload by your line manager.
