Spotlight on Chloe Ackroyd

13 November 2017

This week the spotlight is on Chloe Ackroyd, Marketing Communications Manager, UCL Careers.

Chloe Ackroyd

What is your role and what does it involve?

I am Marketing and Communications Manager, responsible for all student-facing communications and brand management of UCL Careers. I work with all on-and-offline communication channels including the website, social media, printed materials, PR and branding management, as well as the promotion of our services, events and activities we deliver as a department, internally and externally.

How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role?

I started working at UCL at the beginning of October 2016, so I've been here just over a year now. Previous to that I was Creative Director at Magpie, a marketing communications agency in Leeds working with a lot of educational clients on student marketing campaigns. And prior to that, I was Marketing Manager for Leeds Arts University for seven years.

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

We've launched a new student experience and management software system here at UCL Careers, which enables us to communicate with students more effectively. This change in system has, amongst other things, allowed us to develop and design a newsletter that gives students bespoke information about our services, advice, opportunities and events they can get involved in to help them along their career journey. Since the launch a few months ago, we've doubled the amount of students that have signed up to receive this newsletter, it's been a great channel to engage with them.

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list?

Our new website! We're in much need of a site refresh, and as with most UCL sites we're moving systems. It's a great opportunity to organise and cleanse information we have on the site. I want to ensure that it's more user-friendly and delivers information in a useful way for our audience. I've carried out many focus groups to understand what students want from a careers site and the best way to convey information. It will enable them to engage with us more and to access information dependent what stage they're at in their career-thinking.

What is your favourite album, film and novel?

Album - Bjork's Homogenic

Film - Deerhunter

Novel - Maya Angelou - I know why the caged bird sings

What is your favourite joke (pre-watershed)?

Crime in multi-storey car parks....thats wrong on so many levels!

Who would be your dream dinner guests?

Bjork, Nina Simone, Vincent Cassel, Henri Cartier Bresson, Maya Angelou, Issey Miyake and Yotam Ottolenghi (he can cook our meal!)

What advice would you give your younger self?

Learn to drive sooner rather than later, don't leave it to your 30s like I did!

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I sing backing vocals on a UK Christmas song, which reached number three of the charts in 2003!

What is your favourite place?

Tokyo, Japan - Its the most inspiring, coolest and kooky city i've ever been to. There's so much to feast your eyes upon. I love the neon hue, the cinematic sights, the pace, the food and all the obscurities that it brings. It's unique!
