UCL staff appraisals to be conducted annually from October 2017

18 January 2017

With effect from 1 October 2017, the appraisal policy will be changing and all staff appraisals will be conducted on an annual basis.

Many staff are already on an annual appraisal cycle and the new arrangements will ensure greater consistency across UCL in relation to appraisal processes.  The new annual cycle will affect all staff groups across UCL. This will enable UCL to meet a commitment in the latest Staff Survey Corporate Action Plan to ensure all staff have appropriate objectives for the year ahead and will also address concerns raised by staff about the current appraisal system.

Staff appraisals due to take place on a two-yearly basis should be scheduled annually from October 2017.  Two-yearly appraisals which were conducted during 2016 should be reviewed at an appropriate point in 2017 and annual appraisals should be scheduled thereafter.

For staff who are currently due to have their next appraisal during the period 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018, this can continue as planned with subsequent appraisals held annually thereafter.

Monitoring reports on appraisal completion rates will continue to be sent to departmental contacts to help with local planning arrangements. Online departmental reports will switch to annual completion status from 01 Oct 2017. It is therefore very important that all appraisals are recorded by managers for this purpose.
