UCL secondments to Alan Turing Institute: call for expressions of interest

3 November 2015

This is a call for expressions of interest in UCL secondment to The Alan Turing Institute - the UK National Institute for the Data Sciences.

Quad in autumn You can find out more about the Institute at https://turing.ac.uk/. The Institute is located close to UCL at the British Library.

Secondments are available to UCL academic staff at all levels - lecturer, senior lecturer, reader and professor. There is a separate junior fellowship programme. The objective of this call is to establish the scope and extent of interest in secondment and to provide an opportunity to work with potential secondees on the shaping of a secondment application.

Secondments correspond to a significant investment of time in participating in the Institute's interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research programme in data science. A secondment pays to release the secondee from her/his normal duties and focus a majority of their time on undertaking a research programme in data science at the Institute.

The nature of these collaborations is flexible, with the emphasis on the quality of the science and the added value of undertaking the work at the Institute. This is an excellent opportunity to forge early and productive links with the Alan Turing Institute and to be a part of building the research culture at the Institute.

The expression of interest should include a copy of your CV and a short (say, one-page) covering note explaining how your expertise is relevant to data science and the mission of the Institute, and the type of research you would contribute to. As part of a 6-month scoping process the Institute has been running a series of scientific scoping meetings, recognising early critical mass in the Institute: https://turing.ac.uk/#data-summits-workshops. It is helpful if your covering note explains how complementary expertise to yours can be found across the joint venture partners.

The Alan Turing Institute is committed to equality and valuing diversity. ‪In keeping with these declared principles, we would, in particular, encourage strong women researchers to put themselves forward for these positions. Secondments are compatible with part-time and flexible careers.

For more information regarding this process, or for an informal discussion, contact the UCL/ATI University Liaison Director, Sofia Olhede s.olhede@ucl.ac.uk. Additional information regarding the Institute and the secondment process can also be obtained from Anthony Finkelstein, John Shawe-Taylor and Patrick Wolfe. You are advised to inform your Head of Department of your interest in the Alan Turing Institute secondment programme.

Completed expressions of interest should be sent to Sofia Olhede s.olhede@ucl.ac.uk by Monday 23 November 2015.

Sofia will be holding a briefing session for anyone interested in applying for an ATI secondment on Wednesday 11 November at 2pm. People wanting to attend the briefing session should please email Russell Rodrigues (turing@ucl.ac.uk).
