Spotlight on Ele Cooper

24 February 2012

This week the spotlight is on Ele Cooper, Teaching and Learning Portal editor, Centre for Advancement of Learning and Teaching (CALT).

Ele Cooper

What is your role and what does it involve?

I'm the editor of the Teaching and Learning Portal, a new site that highlights the innovative teaching going on around UCL as well as providing practical advice and resources for staff.

My job involves writing news and features, managing social media and ensuring that all the information on the portal is accurate and up-to-date. I've only written a handful of articles so far, but I've been fascinated by what the teachers that I've interviewed have been doing.

The challenge now is to make more people aware of the portal and the fact that they can contact me for editorial coverage whenever they're doing exciting work.

How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role?

Before starting at UCL in September, I was a journalist. Previous roles include editing fashion and travel magazines and a property website, and working on Time Out Dubai.

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

It's early days for the portal but the Times Higher recently featured an opinion piece that we published (Carl Gombrich's 'Lectures as a way of delivering content are over'), which was fantastic in terms of generating awareness of the site.

What is your life like outside UCL?

I am a bit of a travel obsessive and try to get away as often as possible. I also go to a lot of stand-up comedy, volunteer at children's writing charity the Ministry of Stories and (very occasionally) swim at the ULU.
