Provost's Teaching Awards 2014: new categories, criteria and change to nomination process

20 March 2014

Now in its 8th Year the prestigious UCL Provost's Teaching Awards celebrate and reward staff for significant contributions in any aspect of teaching and learning: lecturing, course design, assessment, tutoring, e-learning, research supervision, object based learning, lab practicals or demonstrations etc.

UCL President and Provost, Professor Michael Arthur has announced a new category of the Provost's Teaching Award for CPD and Short Courses developed at UCL. This new category will recognise an individual, team or department for excellence and innovation in life long learning . As HEIs embrace learning throughout life in addition to the more traditional university experience, this award will also encourage dialogue between the University, employers and individuals to ensure that UCL offers an appropriate range of skills training opportunities to support the workforce of the future. The new CPD and Short Courses Award joins the Individual Teaching Awards (4 categories - Staff at the beginning of their career, Experienced academic staff, Staff involved in Student Learning and Post-graduate Teaching Assistants) and Team Collaboration and Achievement in Teaching Award.

This year, the criteria for the awards have been amended to place greater emphasis on sustained excellence in teaching, rather than solely on innovation. The applications process has also been changed to enable staff who wish to be considered for an award to approach their Head of Department directly.

Heads of Department are also encouraged to identify and consult any staff they would like to nominate. These changes have been made in response to feedback from staff, with the aim of encouraging a broad field of applications.

Submissions are made up of a completed application from, a short supporting statement from the Head of Department or Dean of Faculty and a case written by the applicant - please follow this link.

The awarding panel, convened by me, will consider how the awarding criteria of quality, impact and innovation have been met - as well as how consonant with UCL's Learning and Teaching Strategy each nomination is.

The ceremony will be 9 June when the Provost's Teaching Award Winners will be joined by the winners of the UCLU-organised Student Choice Teaching Awards.
